Bernese Mountain Dog Gift Boxes The proceeds from these special Gift Boxes goes to the Berner-Garde Foundation whose mission is "to ensure that all Bernese Mountain Dogs have a long and healthy lifespan of 12 - 14 years." The Foundation was established to collect, maintain and disseminate information about genetic diseases observed in the Bernese Mountain Dog. The BGF is comprised of a voluntary Board of Directors, several committees and, at its core, a computerized database. Berner-Garde Foundation and Michigan State University, with support from the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, have established a repository that collects, stores and maintains DNA and tissue samples from a large population of Bernese Mountain Dogs, whether affected with a disorder or not, along with pedigree and medical history information. MSU is providing a repository that will store and catalog DNA and tissue samples for future health research purposes, and will use available state of the art diagnostic evaluation of submitted specimens, as well. Approximately 9.7% of Bernese dogs get cancer and the average age at which cancer is diagnosed is at 6 years, although it varies widely. It is so difficult when we lose our companions but in particular when they go in the prime of their life. A special thought to those who still choose the Bernese Mountain Dog as their companion knowing the tough odds that face them.
Thank you to all who purchased the Bernese Christmas box in 2010, because of you we were able to donate $777.00 to the Berner Lovers' AKC Canine Health Foundation Donor Advised Fund to fight cancer in the Bernese Mountain Dog. This year it will go to the Berner-Garde Foundation. A lucky number for sure, and with any luck we can match or beat that this year.
